Phantom Limbs

A time when a reality only exists in a person’s mind happens a lot of the time with bugs, so here is an example….

You see a spider in the corner of the room, so you grab a napkin to kill it with, but the celling is too tall so you stand on a chair to reach it, the chair isn’t quite as tall as you need it so you strech up and attempt to kill the spider, but when you look in the napkin there is no spider! Then you feel a tickle on your arm, “AHHHH!” you think it is the spider, so you check you arm, and there is no spider. Then you check your other arm, no spider. Then you feel somthing tickle on your neck…. but again it is not the spider.

Obviously the spider fell on the floor, but until you find the spider you keep assuming that the spider is on you somewhere. This reality exists only in your head, because you feel tickles like the spider is on you, but it isn’t when you check.

If something lies outside our realm of perception, then how can we know it?

Mr. Gullickson’s blood is red.

I know that Gully’s blood is red because i have seen it.

Without seeing Gully’s blood I know that it is red because the scientific make-up of blood is that it is iron (hemogloben), and when it touches the oxygen in the air the oxygen and iron mix together and turn the blood red. Everyone has blue blood when it is inside them and you can see it through their skin, in thier veins. Even if you didn’t know the properties of blood, everyone bleeds the same color (red) because if your body is stable and healthy then they bleed the same color. If someone is sick sometimes there blood is lighter or darker red because how they are not as healthy as everyone. Just as if everyone has a brain, or a stomach, you don’t have to see someone’s stomach to know that they have one, everyone is the same on the inside.

okay sorrrrry blood is red all the time…. but the rest of the blog is true. (Koua thought it was blue too)

Propaganda

Propaganda takes the form of art because it attracts attention more easily. People notice pictures more than a whole bunch of words, because it is easier to get the main point of the picture than have to read the whole page explaining every little detail of something. Also art can be fun and easy to make, rather than typing something. There are not a lot of other ways to make propaganda than art. Propaganda is mostly posters, comercials, songs, exc. Which makes it mostly creative and therefore art.

Knowledge Issue- North Korea

A knowledge issue associated with North Korea is that their only forms of art have to do with their leaders, or pro-government ideas. When there was art on the walls it was of Kim Jung Il or his relative (dad?… brother?) and the mural on the wall was soliders. This is an issue because that makes less individualism in North Korea, and everything little kids see is art and stories about Kim Jung Il, this makes it so the kids never learn about anything else, like art from other cultures or different view points from other countries.

This is a knowledge issue because with limited art then there is not a lot of emotion behind the art, and then the art doesn’t have a real quailty to it, or meaning behind it.

History

I think that we are not being taught “fake” stuff in history class, just that we are being taught stuff that isn’t properly backed up with evidence, or that it doesn’t show all the perspectives of the event. An example would be the moon landing, in history we are taught that it happened, although they do not tell us that there are theories that it didn’t happen. History class is teaching the basic facts like when wars happen although there are not accurate, like what the war is called is other countries, or the views of the other countries on that war.

Human Science

I think that religion is a human science, because some people are totally devoted to their religion, and to them the practices of their religion is what they do, so therefore to study that person (or group of people) you would have to include their religion. In human science when you study the people sometimes religion (or lack of religion) is important to the study of that person or culture.

Language

I think that written language would be most effective to explain to someone that the world is round, because then you could draw pictures and diagrams of the world. You could draw a world map as a sphere and make diagrams of the crust, mantle exc. of the different layers of the earth, and also do gravitational math problems to prove the existance of gravity. You could also make solar system diagrams, and charts thus proving that the other planets are spherical.

This would be more effective than telling someone or trying to act it out because then you could use math and diagrams to explain it to someone without trying to do an interpretive dance or just saying it because they could just ignore what you said because it could be false, like I could say, apples are blue, that doesn’t mean that you have to believe me, but if I showed you a chemical compound of an apple, that proves the apple is blue then you might believe me more.

Mathematics

I think that mathematical constants like the golden ratio and others are man made. I think that they exist but people try very hard to find links between the ratios and such of certain things. Everyone is made similar so therefore there is a common ratio between everyone, but that doesn’t mean that the common ration exists in everything and it naturally occurs. It just means that there are certain similarities between things because they are created the same, for example there would be a “golden ratio” for the length of tigers and the length of their legs, it wouldn’t be the same ratio as for humans it would be a separate tiger ratio.

Art

Over analyzing are diminishes the value of art because when you take a piece of art and search for hidden meanings and try to imagine what the artist was thinking of when he/she made the work, it makes you look too deeply into the piece of art. By over analyzing the meaning of the art you can look too hard and miss the original concept. For example, like the video we watched on the first day, of the people throwing the basketball and the gorilla, that could be a peice of art work and you are looking too hard for the meaning and missing the man in the gorilla suit.

Ethics

Ethics can be quantized to a certain extent. There are situations where you know it has been taken too far, like the situation that was used of someone stealing from work. The fact that they are stealing is wrong but then there are other factors, like why the are stealing, if they had a good intention there might not be as much of a problem as if there were bad intentions behind the stealing. The ethics behind the situation would be based on the extent f the situation, which would put a limit on the ethics therefore quanitfying it.
